In the late 1930′s the nation’s up-and-coming billion dollar crop was thriving. That was hemp, of course, which is the non-medicinal form of the cannabis plant. As industrial companies were stocking hemp processing equipment in their factories, the token evil villain was stepping up to bat: Du Pont.
In 1937, our nation’s industry was at a crossroads: Either continue industrializing hemp for natural paper products, or the giant-sized DuPont could make synthetic products using chemicals. Since cannabis was made illegal that year, DuPont won the war.
Now we live in a world of toxic garbage that is harmful for our environment. Hemp can be used to make most of the products currently made of plastic and Styrofoam. And of course, because it is completely natural, it is 100% biodegradable.
One of the reasons hemp is such a durable crop is because it contains the strongest plant fiber in the world. Its fibers are the longest, much more longer than the ones found in timber. And the longer the fiber, the stronger the product.
I wasn’t even surprised to hear that fuel for our cars can be made from hemp, giving off no pollution into the air. An easy way to know this is to burn hemp. No black smoke. Can’t say the same for gasoline.
And the fact that cannabis/hemp requires no pesticides, that’s either amazing or just plain freaky. I know I would feel much more comfortable using a product that wasn’t sprayed with poison in its earlier stages.
This is either the most miraculous plant in the world in the world or the most evil. There’s no in-between. That’s a decision that each person must make on their own.
Fast facts:
*Our nation’s first flag was made of hemp. Along with our Constitution.
*George Washington was a hemp farmer. During the Colonial Era and Early Republic, Americans were legally bound to grow hemp.
*Hemp produces more pulp per acre than timber.
