I’m not short, but I’m not tall.
After much research throughout the Age of the Internet, I have found that when you average the heights of all American men, that height comes out to be around 5’ 10 ½”, but the median (the most occurring) height of an American man is 5’ 9”. According to all my research based on several different websites, more men in America are my height than any other height: 5’ 9”.
What that has meant for me since high school is that any time I get my picture taken in a group setting, typically only my head is visible. Because I’m not short (so I don’t have to crouch or sit on the first row) nor am I tall (standing head-and-shoulders taller than everyone else). So it has always been awkward for me to find the right place to stand when participating in a group picture. I become a floating head.
There really is something to this concept that the height of 5’ 9” is neither short nor tall, for a man. Men who are simply an inch shorter, at 5’ 8”, are often considered to be short: Robin Williams, Ben Stiller, Steve Carell. While men who are just an inch taller, at 5’ 10”, are considered to be tall: Patrick Swayze, Matt Damon, Eddie Murphy.
It seems 5’ 9” is the most non-distinct and most forgettable height. I’ve had people say to me, after learning my height, say, “I thought you were about 6 feet tall. Really? You’re only 5’ 9”? Stand up…” Of course, for women, being 5’ 9” is definitely a distinct height. Women who are 5’ 9” are considered tall: Mariah Carey, Dianne Sawyer, Cindy Crawford, Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts.
In all my research, I have also found that 5’ 9” is a very popular height for male celebrities and entertainers. Below are some examples of these men. But I will go ahead and make this disclaimer now:
No one can know for sure the height of a celebrity. These are based on multiple websites, in addition to my own “eyeballing” them in comparison and contrast to other actors. While many people think Tom Cruise is only 5’ 7” and that he always wears lifts in his shoes to appear taller, I disagree.
In the movie Vanilla Sky, when his character is arrested for murder, standing in front of the height chart, it is quite clear he is 69 inches tall (5’ 9”). In the movie Rain Main, he walks alongside Dustin Hoffman, who is 5’ 6”- the 3 inch height difference is pretty obvious. And in Minority Report, Tom Cruise stands directly facing Colin Farrell, who is 5’ 10”- it’s plain to see that Tom Cruise is only an inch shorter. Lastly, he was married to Nicole Kidman, who is 5’ 10”, who always appeared to be only one inch taller.
Famous Men who are 5’ 9”:
Johnny Depp, Michael Jackson, Bret Michaels, Robert Redford, Dick Clark, Ryan Seacrest, Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise, Richard Gere, Eminem, Greg Kinnear, Tony Danza, Kirk Cameron, Usher, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Michael C. Hall (star of Dexter), Jon Bon Jovi, Jack Nicholson, Rob Thomas (lead singer of Matchbox Twenty), Robert Englund (the actor who played Freddy Krueger), Naveen Andrews (Sayid on LOST)
Famous Men who are 5’ 9” and of Jewish Descent:
Albert Einstein, Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Simon Cowell (American Idol judge), Sylvester Stallone (his mother was half-Jewish, half-French), Howie Mandell, Bronson Pinchot (Balki from the ‘80’s sitcom, Perfect Strangers), Jon Lovitz, William Shatner, Justin Long, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shia Lebeouf, Sean Penn
